Who is the Holy Spirit?

Image
You are not alone in wondering who the Holy Spirit is. Series: Look to Jesus Have you ever wondered who the Holy Spirit is? You are not alone. Followers of John the Baptist had to admit, "We have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." (Acts 19:2). So let’s look into God’s Word to find out some things about the Holy Spirit, and why this is such an important subject: WHO is the Holy Spirit? He is the Spirit of God and of Jesus Himself (Romans 8:9). John 16:13 says, “He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth...” WHAT does the Holy Spirit do? The Holy Spirit comforts us (John 14:16); prays for us (Romans 8:26); and guides us to the truth (John 16:13). These are just a few things the Holy Spirit does for us. WHERE is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is everywhere (Psalm 139:7-8), yet lives right inside of us. “Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God” (1 Corinthians 6:19 NLT) WHY did the Holy Spirit c

Resolution or Revolution?

“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” Galatians 5:16 Written by Dan Lee on 27/12/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” Galatians 5:16 It’s popular in many places to make New Year’s Resolutions: “This year I will lose weight” or “I will stop smoking” and so on. However, most of these resolutions are doomed to failure. Research shows that 80% have given up on their resolutions by February, and that 2/3 of dieters gain the lost weight back in a year. The Power Why is it that most of us are powerless to make positive, long-term changes in our behavior? The reality is that people do what they want to do. In the evening, it’s easy to say that you will get up early to exercise. But when the alarm rings the next cold, dark morning, getting out of bed suddenly becomes a lot harder. Our own human efforts will not

Living ‘Ready to Go’ For God

You are never ready to live until you are ready to die. Written by Dr. John Barnett on 24/12/2019 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Holy Spirit, Hope, Praise And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord... Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles

God’s View of the News. Is God forsaking us?

Is God forsaking us? Written by Ruth on 29/10/2019 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Future, Hope, Prophecy, News Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. Revelation 1:3 One of the things we need to accept in today’s world of news is that nearly everyone has the opportunity to reach people far beyond their town or country with the news they are writing or telling. Such information is often self-serving rather than providing the truth. The Bible urges us to be careful in what we listen to, not just acting on something before we have verified it is true (Proverbs 14:15). Deuteronomy 11:16 warns us to beware lest our hearts are deceived. What is the news doing to you? Jesus told us many of the things that would happen in these last days. He said He told us so we would recognize the times when we see these things happen, and we will believe Him. (Mark 13:23) God tells

What Will Happen in the End Times?

Do you fear the future? Written by Ruth on 24/07/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Fear, Future, Hope waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, Titus 2:13 The greatest message Jesus has for us in the Bible is that we do not need to be afraid. He has made a way of safety for us! Do not be afraid God tells us we never need to be afraid! It does not matter what happens around us – we could lose our job and not find a new one, or a storm could destroy all we have. God said, “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). Jesus told us the reason we don’t need to fear in John 16:33 – He has already conquered all trouble and tribulation. We may not be able to see this victory in our circumstances yet, but we can experience His presence in our lives no matter what happens (see Philippians 4:7). U

The Coming of Jesus: A Story Told Throughout the Bible

The one life God’s Word is really all about Written by GodLife on 13/12/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Incarnation, Jesus “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Luke 24:44 What did Jesus mean when He said to the Jewish leaders of His day, “Examine the scriptures, since you think that in them you have eternal life. They also testify about me.” (John 5:39) As Christmas gets closer, let’s think about what His coming meant for us…and how true these words are. What Moses says When the first couple sinned, God’s judgment on their tempter was the first hint of Jesus’ coming: “I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed.” (Genesis 3:15) God gave Abraham a ram instead of allowing him to kill his son. Afterward, Abraham named the place “Yahweh-Yireh.” (Genesis 22:14) It showed he somehow knew God would see to it that a fitting sa

There are more than 300 prophecies about Jesus (the Messiah) in the Old Testament. Written by Joy on 07/12/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Jesus, Jesus Birth, Prophecy “For to us a child is born, …. and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity.” Isaiah 9:6-7 There are more than 300 prophecies about Jesus (the Messiah) in the Old Testament. Jesus fulfills every prophecy! Since it’s the Christmas season, let’s take a look at 3 ways the coming of Jesus was foretold. 1. The Miracle of His Birth “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). God uses His supernatural power to give us evidence that He, and He alone, is doing something amazing. The foretold virgin birth is only possible by God. It

What Prophecies Did Jesus Fulfill?

Long before Jesus was born, the Bible predicted his life and death. Written by GodLife on 17/12/2019 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Jesus, Prophecy, Salvation, Old Testament And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. Mark 15:24 The Old Testament was completed in 450 B.C., hundreds of years before Jesus was born. Many prophecies were made in astonishing detail by many people throughout these books. In fact, fulfilled prophecy is one of the distinguishing marks of the Bible, helping to prove it is the inspired word of God. Examples of prophecies For instance, the Old Testament foresaw Jesus’ betrayal by someone he trusted: "Even my close friend whom I trusted, he who has shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me." (Psalm 41:9) The New Testament, which records Jesus' life and resurrection, reveals that one of the 12 people Jesus chose to be part of his inner circle betrayed him: "Then Judas Iscario

Finding Hope When There Seems to be None

What does the Bible have to say about hope? Written by Gary Fleetwood on 03/12/2019 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Depression, Hope, Despair, Expectation Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3 It is always very sad to see people who have no hope or meaningful expectations for their life. It is a life of simple despair that leads people to misery, gloom and dark depression. People who have no hope quickly lose heart. They see no light at the end of the tunnel and just want to give up on their life. Unfortunately, one of the worst things someone can do is place their hope in something or someone that cannot help them. People place their hope in things such as the government, money, jobs, financial security, promotions or even friends, but none of those things are able to provide meaningful or permanent hope for a

How to Be Thankful All the Time

Ways you can be thankful even when life is difficult Written by Gary Fleetwood on 20/11/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: God, Thankfulness, Thanksgiving give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 As a young Christian, 1 Thessalonians 5:18 always disturbed me.  It never made sense why I should be thankful for things that did not seem good to me.  However, as we grow spiritually, God’s greater purpose of developing character in our life will become clear, and generally character has to be developed through difficult trials.  The problem is that we want to have a life without any problems, but that is not possible.  There will always be difficult moments, and if we have not learned how the greater purposes of God are being worked into our life, then we may become unthankful and angry towards God. So, why should we be thankful for something that seems to be hurting us? Well, James 1:2-4 says, "Count it a

How do you thank God when you feel like nothing but bad things are happening in your life? Written by Joy on 23/11/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Thankfulness, Thanksgiving, Trust “Be thankful in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 The Bible encourages us to be thankful at all times. He is good, powerful, loving and faithful. God holds the power to change all things, and you can come to Him because he loves you. When my baby was in the hospital fighting for life, I forced myself to thank God (with tears in my eyes), because I remembered that our God is good all the time. Three Simple Ways to Share Your Faith

Image
How to speak about the most important thing in your life. Written by Larry Moyer on 19/11/2019 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Evangelism, Hope, Jesus, Love, Mission Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Colossians 4:5 By Larry Moyer People often ask me how to share Jesus with a person they’ve known may years, but with whom they have never discussed spiritual things. Let me make three suggestions: Bring up Christ in a conversation. Remember that honesty really is the best policy. Because of your friendship, you can say, “Something concerns me. I consider you a good friend, yet I have never spoken to you about the most important person in my life and the most important decision I have ever made. But because of how much I value our friendship, I would love to talk with you about it.” Then begin to share your testimony. Invite them to a special service at your church or some kind of special outreach event. Most likely, they won’t be surprised an

How can people make the earth’s reflection of God’s glory more obvious? Written by GodLife on 12/11/2019 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Creation, Discipleship, Stewardship, Worldview, Lordship Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. Genesis 1:28 The temptation in the Garden of Eden was the first challenge to God’s authority on the good earth. The serpent’s deceptive question was full of distrust: “Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?" (Genesis 3:1) Simple as the question was, it implied Eve shouldn’t trust God. The nourishing abundance of the Garden of Eden proved God’s goodness. Satan introduced doubt of that goodness that led to the fall of mankind. It wasn’t only their disobedience of God’s direct command that led to the fall, however. When Adam and Eve failed to take charge of

The Most Amazing Birth Ever

Christmas Written by Gary Fleetwood on 05/12/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Jesus, Christmas, Salvation, Sacrifice And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Luke 2:7 The virgin birth of Jesus Christ has to be the most amazing birth ever, but there seems to be very little information about it given in the Scriptures. It is really fascinating to think about the fact that in Luke 2:7 the actual birth of Jesus Christ is described with these very simple words, "And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn." Wow! One of the most important events of eternity, and just a few words to describe it. In fact, the New Testament simply does not spend a lot of time describing the birth of Jesus Christ. However, it does spend a great deal of time looking back at Hi

Born at Christmas, Alive Forever

Jesus’ birth was miraculous, in more ways than one Written by Dan Lee on 26/12/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. John 1:1-2 Just like every other human, Jesus had a birthday (which is what Christians celebrate on Christmas) and came into the world as a baby. But that’s where the similarity ends. Unlike other people, Jesus’ existence did not begin on the day of His birth. From the beginning Each of the four Gospels offers a unique account of Jesus’ life. Mark’s Gospel starts with Jesus launching His public ministry. Matthew and Luke begin with genealogies. But John goes way, way back – to the very beginning. He writes: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” (John 1:1-2) It is hard to understand, but God lives outside of time and space. No one created God, but He has always existed. A
