Five Ways Gratitude Can Change Your Life

Where are those avocados? Written by Janet Perez Eckles on 30/01/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Gratitude, Joy “…he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.” Luke 17:16 I am guilty, I confess that often I overlook the gift of gratitude.“Where are the avocados?” I asked my husband as we emptied the bags we got from the market  on the kitchen counter.” I  knew there was something I forgot,” he said. Forgot? He knows life isn’t life for me without my green, delicious friends in my salads. As a gentle complaint was about to slip out of my mouth, I stopped. I changed the way I was thinking. Instead, as I put items away, I gather thoughts of gratitude—thank you God for this fruit. Thank you for my bread. Thank you for these vegetables... Then the doorbell interrupted me. “Hey!” I said to the neighbor as I opened the door.”She placed a heavy plastic bag in my hands. “Here are more avocados from our tree. They’re all yours.” A smile ca

How to Bring Back Joy

Take heart. Written by Janet Perez Eckles on 16/01/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Joy, Jesus, Hope, Restoration And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” Matthew 9:2 The plane landed in Phoenix, I unbuckled my seatbelt and was about to stand up. But before I did, I searched for my cell phone, making sure I had it in order to call the person to pick me up from the airport. I looked in the pockets, in the bag, in my purse. No cell phone. For a moment, fear robbed my joy. I took a deep breath, again reached at the bottom of my bag and sure enough, there was my cell phone. Have you done that? All is going well, when suddenly, without warning, something happens that robs your joy and steals your peace? The secret to bring back that joy is found in two words, two lovely words. The words that call our attention. Jesus pronounced them after joy

When 'Never' Is Good News

Jesus promises us eternal life in heaven Written by Janet Perez Eckles on 23/01/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Eternity, Joy, Heaven I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die… John 11:25-26 I didn’t know if the turkey or I was more stuffed. I cleared the dishes from the table and pulled out a variety of pies. “Dessert anyone?” “I’ll never eat again,” my friend said. “I’m so very full.” “Never say never,” I said. In fact, none of us should ever say never. We don’t know what life will bring, how situations might turn out or even how our outlook might change. But there is the One who said never. And when He said it, eternity opened up shining with joy. When He said never, our lives changed. Our tomorrows became lovely. And by saying never, He revealed the secret to our future was immensely beautiful. Here’s where Jesus said never: “I am the resurrection and the lif

Do You Need Salvation?

Salvation is what you need if you realize that you have sinned. Written by Hope on 11/01/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Salvation “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 Look at the people around you: the people in your home, at your job and on television. Every single one of them is a sinner. Everyone has sinned against God. The Bible says it like this: “No-one is righteous — not even one” (Romans 3:10). So what can you do when you realize you have sinned? God Promised Salvation As humans, we are naturally sinful. We turn away from God, choosing sin rather than living the life God wants for us. But from the very beginning, God had a plan to save us. The plan is called Salvation. The Prophet Isaiah wrote in God’s Word about the Savior. “I will make You a light to the Gentiles, and You will bring My salvation to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). This promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. God

God’s Way To Self-Esteem

Do you love yourself? Written by GodLife on 02/08/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Faith, Growth, Identity, Self Esteem, Shame A second [commandment] is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:39 When Jesus quoted Leviticus 19:18, He was not teaching us to love ourselves. In stating that we already love ourselves, He was using the quality of that already-present love for ourselves to teach us how to love others. One who really loves is fully-invested in the loved one's best interests. Here are three ways that attitude towards self is supposed to be altered when God gives us a new heart (Psalm 51:10) with His love poured out (Romans 5:5) in it. 1. Practice repentance: Guilt brings shame and hopelessness. The whole time God is working through the things which happen to you to conform you to Christ's image (Romans 8:28-29), the world is also trying to force you to conform to its own. (Romans 12:2) One of the ways this is done is through subtl

The Selfish Life? Or Jesus?

A follower is made for God’s calling Written by GodLife on 09/08/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Evangelism, Growth, Identity, Leadership, Self Esteem I answered, 'Why should someone like me have to run and hide in the temple to save my life? I won’t go!' Nehemiah 6:11 Nehemiah was a leader who did not let pressure, apathy, ridicule or opposition stop him. He knew what to do and how to do it. Most of all, he knew his identity: a chosen and beloved servant of the most High God. Here are three ways God can give you the same identity: 1. God makes sure you can relate to sinners Sometimes new believers are surprised to find that their old nature is not gone. You’ll always need God’s grace. Without Christ as your center, you can do nothing. (John 15:1-5) Colossians 2:6 says "As you have put your trust in Christ Jesus the Lord to save you from the punishment of sin, now let Him lead you in every step." If you have nothing you did not receive, (1 Corinthian

Do Not Commit Sexual Assault Or Harass Others

A woman is made in God’s image and her body is meant for His glory. Written by Hope on 06/12/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Sex, Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment, Temptation, Self Control Tell the young men to have self-control in everything. Titus 2:6 A woman is made in God’s image. Her body is meant to bring Him glory, not to become a source of ungodly lust. God is working His unique plan in her life. Your life as a Christian man should exhibit the “self-controlled” fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:23), not the immoral ways of the flesh (Galatians 5:19). Even if you see her walking alone, even if she is wearing something provocative, even if she is sexually forward with you, resist temptations to be immoral in thought or deed. God has promised that He “will show you how to escape from your temptations” (I Corinthians 10:13). And He asks that you “offer your bodies to him as a living sacrifice, pure and pleasing” (Romans 12:1). God Commands Self-Control In some soc

How To Avoid Sexual Temptation

Guard Yourself Written by Dan Lee on 11/07/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Lust, Pornography, Sex, Temptation “Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light.” Matthew 6:22 These words of Jesus tell us how important our eyes are, and how diligent we must be to watch what goes into our mind through our eyes. God’s word shows us several ways to do this: 1. Be Careful What You Look At Jesus said, “anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). The first step to sexual temptation (and sometimes the sin itself) is looking. Today’s world can be full of temptations for the eyes. Advertisements, movies and television, and things on the Internet can all lead us to sin. You must carefully choose what you watch and where you go. If seeing women in bathing suits makes you think lustful thoughts, then you need to stay away from the beach. If Internet

Facing Sexual Temptation

Everyone—from presidents to preachers—is subject to sexual temptation. Tags: Sex, Sin, Temptation Adultery. It’s a common word and a common occurrence in our society. But adultery’s stain goes deeper than the individual. More dishonor has come to the name of Jesus Christ by sexual sin than any other sin. You Will be Tempted. C.S. Lewis, in The Screwtape Letters, said, "No man knows how bad he is until he has tried to be good. There is a silly idea that good people don’t know what temptation means." We must learn from the Lord to enjoy full mastery over sex, His marvelous gift. "For God did not give us the spirit of timidity," Paul reminds us, "but the spirit of power and love and self-control." Proverbs 4:23 exhorts, "Above all else, guard your heart, for out of it flow the springs of life." How can we do that? Monitor your fantasizing and daydreaming when your mind is idle. Refuse pornography, whether written or in movies or videos

How Should You Respond To Sexual Advances?

A godly person will be patient and loyal; avoid men who try and pressure you into sex. Written by Hope on 13/12/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Sex, Love, Patience, Temptation, Sexual Temptation Love is kind and patient, never jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. Love isn’t selfish or quick-tempered. Love is always supportive, loyal, hopeful, and trusting. I Corinthians 13:4-7 If a woman experiences sexual harassment or assault, it can become a harmful and enduring burden for her. It is one of the cruelest symptoms of this fallen world. How should you respond when someone approaches you for improper sexual involvement? 1. Do You Welcome Sexual Advances? Are you pleased when a man presents sexual advances? Are you tempted to return his attention? Remember, the Lord knows your heart, and “God’s Spirit gives us love and self-control” (II Timothy 1:7). Do not give in to temptation or pressure to be sexually available. Your are made in God’s image and meant for His glory: “you

The Lord forgives our sins, heals us when we are sick and protects us from death.

The Lord forgives our sins, heals us when we are sick and protects us from death. Written by Lois on 22/08/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Healing, Compassion, Truth, Admonitions, Jesus Suddenly a man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus. He said, “Lord, you have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to.” Jesus put his hand on the man and said, “I want to! Now you are well.” At once the man’s leprosy disappeared. Matthew 8:2-3 Jesus gives us unforgettable examples of how to care for the sick. He shows us His care for the sick by being willing to touch someone with a deadly and contagious disease with His bare hands. Back in the time of Jesus, people diagnosed with leprosy were untouched by any human, forcibly removed from their homes and families and sent into exile. Thanks to extensive medical breakthroughs, exiling lepers is no longer practiced, but there are many different diseases today that have taken the place of leprosy in the eyes of society. One

Why Am I Sick?

In many cases sickness has nothing to do with punishment for sin. In fact, God often uses suffering for His glory and our own good. Written by Hope on 03/10/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional “[The Lord] said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” II Corinthians 12:9a What is your health like? Do you know that God loves you and can work in your life, even if you are suffering physically? What You Might Have Heard Many Christians have heard that sickness or illness is caused by your sin or weak faith. Under Old Testament Law, God promised the nation of Israel: “If you listen to [God’s] regulations and faithfully obey them,... the Lord will protect you from all sickness” (Deuteronomy 7:12, 15). But “if you refuse to listen to the Lord your God, all these curses will come and overwhelm you (Deuteronomy 28:15), including being afflicted “with diseases” (Deuteronomy 28:21). Does that still apply today? Sickness Itself Is Not Evidence of A Curse In many places,

When Cancer Came to Our Home

No one in this life is exempt from struggles, heartaches, and difficulties. Tags: Cancer, Difficulty, Healing, Hope, Sickness Nearly 20 years after Patricia and I were married, we faced the biggest challenge of our lives when she discovered a lump in one breast. We were just finishing a six-city speaking tour in Scotland— and rushed back home to Portland, Oregon. Yes, there was a problem. A biopsy was necessary. Then came the doctor’s verdict. For a moment we sat in stunned silence, trying to block out his awful words. “The tumor is malignant and radical surgery must be performed immediately. We can’t delay.” Surgery was scheduled for the following Monday. Pat had cancer. When we got back to the house, I headed to my office in the basement. Somehow I had to come to grips with this terrible blow, I told myself. But a hundred emotions welled up inside me, and I began to weep. This was the sort of thing that happens to other people, but not to my wife. Not to Pat. My thoughts w

If God is Good, Why Don’t I Have Enough Money?

How and When Can I Claim the Promise, “God will supply all your needs?” Written by GodLife on 25/10/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Benevolence, Giving, Money, Poverty, Providence, Provision, Riches, Unemployment, Work “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 It’s shameful when someone says, “You are poor because you do not have enough faith.” The Bible says when they make godliness a way to get rich, they have “corrupt minds” and “have turned their backs on the truth.” (1 Timothy 6:5-6) David did say, “I have been young and now I am old, yet I have not seen the righteous abandoned or his children begging for bread.” (Psalm 37:25) But there’s a big difference between “wealth” and “begging for bread.” How can you keep from missing out on all your loving Father has for you? Do you worry about money?

3 reasons not to worry about money Written by Hope on 08/03/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Finances, Money, Worry “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.” Proverbs 3:9 The Bible is full of stories showing God working in the lives of wealthy people. Abraham, Israel’s King David, and Lydia (a woman who sold purple dye) are just a few. But when Jesus also said that “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” it was a warning that money can hurt more than it helps. (Matthew 19:24). How can you follow Jesus and His Word rather than letting money keep you from following God? Here are 3 truths to help. Money Will Never Satisfy Although money is not a bad thing, “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). Christians should not let anything--including money--interfere with their relationship with God. God is a great provider. Even among the w

Did God Put a Hole in My Pocket?

Does your money vanish like a vapor? Written by Lois on 07/06/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional You have planted much but harvest little…You earn money, but put it into a bag with holes. Haggai 1:6 On a hot summer day you can actually see water evaporating from a stream. Does your money appear to be vanishing? Are you constantly spending more than you earn? Maybe the solution is not getting more money into your hands. Let’s go to God’s word to see what the Scriptures say about money. Do you believe God cares about what you do with the money you earn? What has first place in your life, God or money? For one month, try writing down all of your purchases. This is a good way to reveal where your money is going and what has first place in your heart. Does God have first place, or do you spend most of your money eating out or buying clothes and other material things? Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, “…first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness

Your Finances and God's Promises

Many passages in the Bible talk about giving our money and other possessions given to us by God back to God Tags: Finances, Generosity, God, Money, Tithe In many passages of the Bible where it talks about giving our money (and other possessions given to us by God) back to God, He always adds a promise to it. He doesn’t have to do that! Because He is God He could just say, “Do this because I say so – that’s why.” But He doesn’t. He is loving and good, and He chooses to bless us when we obey Him. While we do not respond to God’s command in order to gain a personal benefit, let’s examine the promises He makes to us when we are faithful in our giving. Look up Proverbs 3:9-10. The first lesson in these verses is that we honor the Lord with our wealth. Why? To express gratitude for all He has given us. This honors Him, and we do it because we love Him. We also see that God requires our “firstfruits.” That means we set aside our giving for Him right when we first receive, not out of

He lived far above

*RHAPSODY OF REALITIES DAILY DEVOTIONAL (JANUARY PDF => http://bit.ly/2iK6qRp)* *LIVE ABOVE THE SYSTEMS .* Wednesday, January 10th .  Pastor Chris _*Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content (Philippians 4:11).*_ The life the Master lived here on earth was so impressive. Jesus was far removed from the decadence of the world, the penury around Him and the corruption and failure of His society. He lived far above, and beyond the government and systems of the day when He walked the earth. We don’t find Jesus interfering with their politics or trying to do something about their economy. In other words, He didn’t bring some strange or heavenly currency into their system, yet He was never limited by money. Money was His slave. He was self-sufficient. Whatever He required, He didn’t need to call out to heaven; He brought it forth from within. This is the life that He’s given us: He’s made us self-sufficient, to f

Four Biblical Thoughts on Riches

Does God want us to be rich? Written by Dan Lee on 15/03/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Contentment, Finances, Money, Poor, Riches “Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.” 1 Timothy 6:6 Are some preachers right when they say God wants us to be rich? They tell us we can get anything just by praying for it. Their lavish lifestyles seem to be an example of how God wants to “bless” us. Paul wrote a letter to Timothy and gave a strong NO to this idea. Here are 4 biblical thoughts on riches: 1. Be Content With God “Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth” (1 Timothy 6:6). This verse tells us that if we are believers in Christ and have a good relationship with God, we should be satisfied. We are already wealthy. On the other hand, when we place anything, including material things, above God, we make idols out of them. How terrible it would be if following Jesus helped us only in this life! (1 Corinthians 15:19) God may use the resources

The Bible Describes Heaven as a Real Place

What does the Bible say about heaven? Written by Lois on 19/07/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Forgiveness, Grace, Heaven, Jesus, Sin Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into Heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Acts 7:55 (NLT) Will good works, traditions or experiences get you to heaven? Some prophets and disciples were given a glimpse of Heaven or were taken up into Heaven. Stephen, a first-century Christian, was stoned to death because of his faith. Before his death, Stephen asked the Lord to forgive those throwing the stones. His final words were “…Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” (Acts 7:59). So, is Heaven an experience or a real place? What does the Bible say about heaven? Here are just three times that the Bible mentions the reality of Heaven: 1. Elijah Was Taken to Heaven Elijah the prophet did not experience death; His disciple Elisha witnessed his being taken to Heaven. It was not a

How to Be Confident You Are Going to Heaven

If you die today, do you think you are going to heaven? Written by Joy on 20/07/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Eternity, Heaven, Salvation, Works “This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God - who does not lie - promised them before the world began.” Titus 1:2 “If you die today, how confident are you that you will go to heaven?” Someone asked me that question many years ago and my response was 90%. I thought I was being humble and realistic. After all, no one is perfect! But I was a “good” person and went to church regularly. However, I did not realize that I had just denied Jesus and made my salvation based on my own good works. Remember that Salvation is a Gift “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Last week, we explained how you become a Christian by belief in

Everyone is in need of salvation. The Bible, in Romans 5, tells us that all sin and fall short of God’s glory. Written by GodLife Series: New Believers Guide Tags: Grace, Salvation Everyone is in need of salvation. The Bible, in Romans 5, tells us that all sin and fall short of God’s glory and that this sin deserves death. How many sin? All. And since all of us sin, all of us face death. Our sin is what separates us from God, and it only takes one sin. Our good deeds cannot change that. Imagine someone was guilty of murder and was pleading his case in court: “But I fed the homeless, Your Honor! I also gave away money to charity and was nice to my mom!” His few good acts wouldn’t erase the murder he had committed. He would still have to pay the penalty for his sin. It is the same with us. Stuck in our sin and moving towards death, all of us are in a hopeless situation. "But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are.&q

Can Justice and Mercy Work Together?

Here’s how God gives justice and mercy for your benefit Written by Hope on 23/05/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: God, Justice, Mercy Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants. Psalm 89:14 The Bible tells us great things about God. It makes us love and worship Him. At other times, God can seem very strict. God is perfect, and we are sinners. Is it possible for God to overlook our imperfections and at the same time remain perfectly just (fair)? What is God’s justice? God created people for His glory. (Isaiah 43:7) His Law was meant to set His people apart from everyone else. (Deuteronomy 28:1) Those laws reflected His own nature, and He wants to make people like Him. In the past, those serving Him directly owned no permanent property. Yet all their needs were met. There was enough for the poor and the widows and orphans. Like God’s love, justice was for everyone equally. But people could not resist b
