Healing Stories in the Bible

Is it better to live with the disease or to be healed? Written by Lois on 21/03/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Grace, Healing, Mercy, Sickness, Sin One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?' John 5:5 In Bible times, leprosy was a dreaded, incurable skin condition. It caused physical deformity. It meant victims couldn’t come to worship meetings. They had to live by themselves. It made a good picture of what sin does to us. Sin is a disease that affects young and old, great and small. It cuts us off from God and from others. Sometimes We’re Reluctant The Old Testament book of 2 Kings tells about a man named Naaman. He was a great army captain in the time of the prophet Elisha. Naaman had been told the prophet could heal him of his leprosy, and paid him a visit. Instead of meeting him, Elisha sent a messenger ins

How to Pray

Image
Is there a right way to pray? Jesus’ disciples wondered that too. Series: New Believers Guide Is there a right way to pray? Jesus’ disciples were wondering this when they said, “Lord, teach us how to pray” (Luke 11:1). Upon being asked, Jesus gave His disciples—us—a model prayer. It goes like this: “Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us for our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen.” (Matthew 6:9-13). Why this prayer? Jesus didn’t mean that this would be the only words you could pray. Otherwise He wouldn’t have prayed other things He did in the Bible. Instead, this prayer guides us, just as railroad tracks guide a train. Look at the different parts of the prayer: Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be your name: Yo

The Power of Prayer

Have you ever heard of the A.C.T.S. of prayer? Written by Hope on 17/11/2013 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Prayer "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results." James 5:16 Prayer is just lovingly, reverently talking to God. Have you ever heard of the A.C.T.S. of prayer? Each letter stands for one kind of prayer. It is not the only or "right" prayer model, but it can help remind us of some of the basic things to cover when we approach our Heavenly Father in prayer: A = Adoration (praise) C = Confession (of sins) T = Thanksgiving (being grateful to God) S = Supplication (requests) Adoration and Praise Our Creator God is wonderful, and He deserves our praise! That’s why it’s good to start by praising Him. It also gives us a right perspective -- God’s greatness and power compared to our smallness. Jesus began The Lord's

How Can My Prayer Be Heard With Favor?

A Grace Gift from God Written by Ruth on 17/07/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Grace, Tongues, Praying, Relationship What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 1 Corinthians 14:15 What do we need to do for God to hear our prayers? What is Grace? Some people today tell us that we can only speak directly to God when we pray with the “grace gift of tongues.” Let’s look together at what God tells us in the Bible about the prayer of the believer – someone who has accepted Jesus as their Savior. From the unbeliever, there is only one prayer God promises to hear every time – when they call on Jesus to save them. (See John 9:31) There are no magic words for this, no “right words” to be spoken -- it is simply a prayer from the heart for God to help and save them. The thief beside Jesus on the cross prayed simply, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!” (Luk

God Hears Your Prayers

Image
He wants to spend time with you and hear from you. Series: Look to Jesus We learned earlier that God talks to us in the Bible. In prayer, you are talking with God. He knows you better and loves you more than any friend. He wants to spend time with you and hear from you. God is more than a friend. He is the Lord Almighty. He is able to do things for you and knows the right way to help. To know what God is like, just look to Jesus (John 1:18). When Jesus’ disciples asked Him to teach them how to pray, He gave a model prayer, often known as the “Our Father” or “The Lord’s Prayer” (Matthew 6:9-13). It is not a magic formula to be repeated over and over to gain His favor. Rather, it gives some keys for relating to Him. Let’s look at some of them: It starts with worship Our Father in Heaven, holy is Your name. We should approach God with deep respect, knowing at the same time that He is our loving Father. We are called to love God with all that we are. We worship Him and decla

Why Do We Pray?

` Prayer is a conversation between you and God. Here’s why you should pray. Written by Hope on 16/11/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Prayer “How gracious [the Lord] will be when you cry for help! As soon as He hears, He will answer you.” Isaiah 30:19b What Is Prayer? Prayer is talking to God. You can call out to God in praise, confess your sins, thank Him, ask for help, and much more. Prayer is a conversation between you and God. Here’s why you should pray. Why Should We Pray? Do you want to know God? Prayer will help you grow closer to Him. The Lord is constantly speaking to people through the Bible (His Word). He wants us to respond to Him through prayer. That’s why the most important reason we should pray is because God wants us to. By praying, you’re being obedient. God has given many other reasons we should pray. His Word tells us that “the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results” (James 5:16). His Word also promises

Living in the Spirit

What kind of life do you want? Jesus makes a promise to us in John 10:10: “I come that they have life and have it to the full.” Series: New Believers Guide What kind of life do you want? Jesus makes a promise to us in John 10:10: “I come that they have life and have it to the full.” We can claim that promise by living life in the Spirit. In the last lesson we learned that life is a battle between our sinful nature and our spiritual nature. Paul teaches us a great lesson in Galatians 6:7-8: “People harvest only what they plant. If they plant to satisfy their sinful selves, their sinful selves will bring them ruin. But if they plant to please the Spirit, they will receive eternal life from the Spirit.” Think of yourself as a farmer and your life as a crop. What do you want to grow in your life? If we sow seeds of selfish desires, we grow a crop that reflects that. "For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are accordi

How Can I Know if I'm Going to Heaven?

If someone asks, "Do you know where you’re going when you die?" you don't have to wonder. Written by Luis Palau Tags: Heaven If someone asks, "Do you know where you’re going when you die?" you don't have to wonder. In fact, you were made to know that you will live eternally with the Father in heaven. So, how can you answer that question with certainty? 1. Believe God’s promises as revealed in His holy Word, the Bible You receive eternal life in heaven through God’s son, Jesus Christ. This truth is consistent throughout the Bible. You can bank on it! Read for yourself the gospel of John, paying close attention to the many emphases on eternal life. Consider Christ’s words: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:1-2) And also: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no o

How Do You Repent from Sin?

Image
Who would you rather be like: A preacher who showed up to God’s house bragging about his own goodness? Or the humble criminal who knew he was unworthy and desperately needed God’s forgiveness? Written by Hope on 22/06/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” I John 1:8-9 Imagine that a well-known preacher has just spoken at your church service. The preacher is wearing nice clothes, and people are crowding around him so they can shake his hand. Then just a few feet away, you spot a criminal who has recently been released from prison. He is poorly dressed, smells worse than he looks, and no one wants to go near him or talk to him. As the preacher talks to his admirers, you are surprised to hear him say things like: “I am a really good person, because I preach really good message

How To Confess

How is “confession good for the soul?” What is Biblical confession of sins? Written by GodLife on 06/06/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Confession, Forgiveness, Sin, Salvation, Holiness If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 Sin separates you from having a fellowship with God. “Sin is lawlessness.” (1 John 3:4) It includes giving in to temptation. (James 1:13-15) Refusing to do what is right. “…whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” (James 4:17) Even “whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” (Romans 14:23) And “sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (James 1:15) If this is true, there aren’t just “seven deadly sins,” are there? All sin is “mortal!” Classifying sins only hides that fact. We’ve all done and thought things that would make us God’s enemy: “On account of these the wrath of God is coming.” (Colossians 3:6) How can we get

Ephesians 1:3-4 and 2 Peter 1:3 say we have what we need already. “We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God’s own power, when we learned that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness.” His provision is here - now. We need to understand and use the blessings He has provided. How do we do that? How do we receive blessings from God? You receive God’s blessings from His spirit. We must remember that spiritual bl

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God…..” Matthew 5:3-12 To be blessed by God means having God’s favor and goodness. We often think of blessings as riches, high position, health, and happiness. However, Jesus’ famous words about blessings show us that God has a different definition of being blessed. Who is Blessed? Jesus’ list of blessed people in Matthew 5 include the needy, sad, meek, and persecuted. This might offend us since we value
