Kaká: “Without Jesus, I can’t do anything.”

“It may seem that I have everything,” he says. “Due to my wealth and fame, some people ask why or if I still need Jesus. The answer is simple: I need Jesus every day of my life. I really believe that.” on 26/04/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Calling, Personal Transformation, Power, Testimony, Jesus I am the vine; you are the branches. Jones / Sports Spectrum Lying in bed for two months with a broken neck, 18-year-old Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite made a list of 10 goals. These were audacious dreams even for a boy raised on the soccer mania of Brazil – especially one who had needed a medical program to spur his stunted growth and who was yet to crack the starting lineup of the junior squad of São Paulo Football Club. The list began with “Return to soccer” and sc

Lúcio: Seek God first

We need to seek God first, and he will take care of the rest. Tags: God, Jesus, World Cup, Soccer Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6 In the 2002 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match against England, Lúcio made a mistake that allowed England to score the opening goal. 'God would never let that happen to me' “England’s first goal was my fault,” Lúcio says. “When I left the field that day, someone from the Brazilian national team, who isn’t a Christian, nor is he a close friend, said something I’ll never forget. He said, ‘God would never let that happen to me.’ Now, if we had lost 1-0, I’m sure that people wouldn’t have forgotten that I had failed and that the team had lost. But that’s not how it turned out.” The Brazilian national team went on to win the game and the tournament, and Lúcio was one of three players who played all 630 minutes of the tournament.

What Happens When You Accept Christ?

Two great things that happen when you put your faith in Christ Written by Dan Lee on 30/05/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Cross, Forgiveness, God, Guilt, Jesus, Justification “For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.” 2 Corinthians 5:19 The word “gospel” means “good news.” But the message about Jesus is not just good – it’s GREAT news! Many great things happen when someone puts their faith in Christ. Today’s scripture mentions two very important ones. Let’s take a look: Reconciled: Reunited with God “For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself . . .” (2 Corinthians 5:19a). Have you ever been in a broken relationship? It feels terrible when someone you love no longer wants to be your friend, or even considers you an enemy. This was our situation before we knew Christ. Everyone is born sinful; it is our natural state. (Ephesians 2:3) Our ow

How to Listen for God’s Guidance

What are some ways God guides us in His will? Written by Hope on 02/05/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Bible, Prayer, Wisdom “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105 All people long for direction and purpose in life. As Christians, we can ask the Lord to guide us; we do not have to live without purpose. What are some ways God guides us in His will? How should we be listening for His leading? Get Quiet with God and Examine Your Desires Hearing God’s guidance begins with our minds and hearts. The Bible reminds us to “be still” (Psalm 46:10) as we listen for His leading, and to “be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). The Scriptures are full of prayers you can use to ask God to focus on Him, such as: “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!” (Psalm 139:23). Genuinely seek the Lord and “ask our generous God” (James 1:5) to put your thoughts in line with His desires for you. Ask Yourself: Would Je

How to Make Decisions

Let God direct your decisions Written by Gary Schneider on 29/08/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Decisions, Guidance, Bible, Holy Spirit For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. Romans 8:14 Having guidance to make good decisions is one of the most beneficial aspects of being a devoted follower of Christ. If you need to make a decision about a job or about a relationship, or about what to do in any area of your life, you can count on God directing you in these 3 ways: 1. The Bible Everything we do must be in agreement with God’s Word. Of course, the best way to know God’s Word is to study the Bible every day. A mind that is trained in the Word of God can know the mind of God in any situation. Just be careful how you apply God’s Word in your life. Don’t just choose a random Bible verse without looking at its context. This is a form of divination, which is forbidden by God. (See Deuteronomy 18:10.) It’s said that a man was desperately seeking

Why Do We Read the Bible?

You might hear the Bible referred to as “the Word of God,” “Scripture,” or “God’s Word.” But why did God use this book to share His story -- and why should you care? Written by Hope on 09/11/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Bible “Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105 When you are learning about Jesus Christ and about becoming His follower, Christians will suggest that you read the Bible. You might hear the Bible referred to as “the Word of God,” “Scripture,” or “God’s Word.” But why did God use this book to share His story -- and why should you care? What Is The Bible? Thousands of years ago, God began revealing His plan to people on Earth. When people responded in “faith” (Genesis 15:6), God led them and taught them His ways. The Bible tells us Who God is, as God “revealed [His plan] to His holy apostles and prophets” (Ephesians 3:5). These plans were written in laws and holy letters. God also inspired His followers to record th

The Bible is what God uses to reveal exactly how He thinks. Written by Gary Fleetwood on 22/05/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Bible, God, Holy Spirit, Spiritual Discipline Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 Salvation changes a person from the inside out, and changes how they see life.  Previously, they saw life as living for themselves, and now they see life as living for God. “…he (Jesus) died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.” (2 Corinthians 5:15) These are two totally different views with two totally different results. Think of it as simply being able to see life the way that God sees life. The Bible is what God uses to reveal exactly how He thinks, and so the more time we spend in God’s Word, the more we begin to understand

How God Changes Us

When we become believers, God begins to do a work in us to make us more like Christ. Written by Gary Fleetwood on 08/05/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Change, Growth, Holy Spirit, Life, Sin And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18 This is the first study in a series on how God actually changes a person once they become a Christian.  The Bible paints an astonishing picture of what it really means to be a Christian. We are people who have come into a unique relationship with the amazing God of heaven, and we are now living every day in His abundant favor. This new relationship with Christ also brings a new spiritual influence and power that impacts our life. God’s new power helps guide the Christian into a way of life where they can grow spiritually. This new influence in our life guarantees God will al

When Jesus left Earth, he didn't leave us without help. Written by Hope on 04/01/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Personal Transformation Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, and to people far in the future — all who have been called by the Lord our God.” Acts 2:38-39 After His resurrection, Jesus promised to send His Holy Spirit to teach and guide His followers. We who follow Him today have inherited this promise: the Holy Spirit lives within us, guiding us in God’s new life each day. Who or What Is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is one of the three persons of God: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. God sent the Holy Spirit to Christians to teach us and to remind of Jesus’ instructions. The Holy Spirit guides, comforts, and nurtures us

How Does God Change My Life?

What does it mean to receive the Holy Spirit? Written by Gary Fleetwood on 15/05/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Holy Spirit, Life Change, Conversion Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 What does it mean to have a life-changing experience? When I first became a Christian many years ago, my life was filled with many dirty things that I knew were displeasing to God. My problem was that I did not have the power to change – even when I wanted to change. I tried to change things in my life a lot of different times and a lot of different ways, but nothing ever lasted. I kept going back to living the way I had always lived. However, the night that I was saved and Christ became real to me, my heart radically changed. I immediately learned that God was willing to give to me both the desire and the power to change my life. The things that I used to hate, I now loved, and the things that I u

How to Bring Back Joy

Image
Take heart. And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” Matthew 9:2 The plane landed in Phoenix, I unbuckled my seatbelt and was about to stand up. But before I did, I searched for my cell phone, making sure I had it in order to call the person to pick me up from the airport. I looked in the pockets, in the bag, in my purse. No cell phone. For a moment, fear robbed my joy. I took a deep breath, again reached at the bottom of my bag and sure enough, there was my cell phone. Have you done that? All is going well, when suddenly, without warning, something happens that robs your joy and steals your peace? The secret to bring back that joy is found in two words, two lovely words. The words that call our attention. Jesus pronounced them after joy had turned to gloom. He said, “Take heart.” These two words could mean: listen up, pay attention, be enco

When 'Never' Is Good News

Image
Jesus promises us eternal life in heaven I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die… John 11:25-26 I didn’t know if the turkey or I was more stuffed. I cleared the dishes from the table and pulled out a variety of pies. “Dessert anyone?” “I’ll never eat again,” my friend said. “I’m so very full.” “Never say never,” I said. In fact, none of us should ever say never. We don’t know what life will bring, how situations might turn out or even how our outlook might change. But there is the One who said never. And when He said it, eternity opened up shining with joy. When He said never, our lives changed. Our tomorrows became lovely. And by saying never, He revealed the secret to our future was immensely beautiful. Here’s where Jesus said never: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will

Five Ways Gratitude Can Change Your Life

Where are those avocados? Written by Janet Perez Eckles on 30/01/2018 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Gratitude, Joy “…he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.” Luke 17:16 I am guilty, I confess that often I overlook the gift of gratitude.“Where are the avocados?” I asked my husband as we emptied the bags we got from the market  on the kitchen counter.” I  knew there was something I forgot,” he said. Forgot? He knows life isn’t life for me without my green, delicious friends in my salads. As a gentle complaint was about to slip out of my mouth, I stopped. I changed the way I was thinking. Instead, as I put items away, I gather thoughts of gratitude—thank you God for this fruit. Thank you for my bread. Thank you for these vegetables... Then the doorbell interrupted me. “Hey!” I said to the neighbor as I opened the door.”She placed a heavy plastic bag in my hands. “Here are more avocados from our tree. They’re all yours.” A smile

Part 2: The Birth of Jesus

Image
A miraculous beginning to the Messiah's time on Earth Series: Jesus Booklet Jesus Christ was born just over 2,000 years ago in the country of Israel in the Middle East. His birth happened in a miraculous way, because His mother Mary was an unmarried virgin. "This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. "But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.' "All this took place to fulfill what

Moms and dads, don’t underestimate the impact you have upon your children! Written by Luis Palau Tags: Family, Fathers, God, Jesus, Mothers "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). People always say children learn by example. I know that was true in my own life. My dad was a consistent man; the same person at home as he was at church. He rose early on cold winter mornings in Argentina to start a wood fire in the stove. I should have been sleeping, but often I sneaked out of bed just to watch him putter around the house. If I watched long enough, I might see him go into his office—a little study he built on one side of the house—and kneel alone. Wrapped in a blanket or poncho, he would read the Bible and pray before going out to work. Though I was not even eight years old yet, I would steal back to my bed, feeling warm and grateful that I had a good dad. Daily Bible Reading One day Dad told me

Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish. Isaiah 46:9-10 As we are finishing the Christmas season, we are reminded that not only did Jesus come at this time, but He is always with us! A mathematician once calculated that eight predictions of Christ's coming (like the ones in “Part 4” of our Jesus Booklet) had one chance in ten "quadrillion" (10,000,000,000,000,000) of being fulfilled in one person. Why did God go to such dramatic lengths to prove Himself? He did it to “pitch His tent” with us John 1:1-18 sums up the mission of Jesus. He needed to become a man to live among us. Verse 14 literally says He "tabernacled,"

The one life God’s Word is really all about Written by GodLife on 13/12/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Incarnation, Jesus “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Luke 24:44 What did Jesus mean when He said to the Jewish leaders of His day, “Examine the scriptures, since you think that in them you have eternal life. They also testify about me.” (John 5:39) As Christmas gets closer, let’s think about what His coming meant for us…and how true these words are. What Moses says When the first couple sinned, God’s judgment on their tempter was the first hint of Jesus’ coming: “I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed.” (Genesis 3:15) God gave Abraham a ram instead of allowing him to kill his son. Afterward, Abraham named the place “Yahweh-Yireh.” (Genesis 22:14) It showed he somehow knew God would see to it that a fitting

the Lord) will contend with him who contends with you. Isaiah 49:25 One day a heated argument broke out between two otherwise collegial senior managers at our company. What caused the outburst? I didn’t have a clue! That evening, as I read a book called Dealing with the Devil, it dawned on me that Satan, also called the devil, God’s arch enemy, could be stirring up trouble with our managers. The author used an analogy to describe the authority we have in Jesus to make a difference: Suppose a person in street clothes is standing in a busy traffic intersection. He waves his arms wildly to stop oncoming traffic, but cars keep whizzing by. Then he makes one change. He puts on a policeman’s uniform. Instantly drivers comply! Here was my clue. If I were “clothed with Christ” I could influence spiritual traffic. So I “put on my uniform” and prayed in Jesus’ name, taking authority over the troublesome unseen forces. To my amazement, the problem had evaporated by the next day. The devi

Did God Plan for Evil to Exist in the World?

We can choose to walk in God’s ways or we can choose to turn from Him. Written by Hope on 31/08/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional “God wants everyone to be saved and to fully understand the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:4 In the beginning, God created the heavens, the earth and all of the things in it. When God created people, he gave us free will. That means we can choose to walk in God’s ways or we can choose to turn from Him. Choices led to evil entering the world but, originally, God made a perfect and peaceful world. Not Choosing God The Bible records that God gave Adam, the first man, specific instructions to avoid “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Genesis 2:17). However, Adam chose to disobey God’s instructions. As a result, “sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death” (Romans 5:12). God didn’t intend for Adam to eat the fruit. That’s why God warned him. We can see that evil exists in the world because people choose to turn away from God, not because God wants

God is Love. How can I be sure of God’s love?

Image
[May you] know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:19 Billy Graham, who has presented the message of the gospel to millions of people has said, “The more I read the Bible, the more I realize that love is God’s supreme attribute.” I’ve had times when I, like you, have felt far away from God’s love. Perhaps you grew up in a broken home with little or no affection from your parents. You may have lost loved ones to illness, accident or war. You may have faced poverty and famine as daily realities. Pain is continuously nearby. Where is God’s love in all this? I believe God’s heart aches more than we can ever know at the suffering, injustice and heavy burdens His children encounter. Sin, when it entered the world, brought consequences that affect our lives every day. But God’s love for each of us was supremely evident when He sent His son, Jesus, to buy us back, or “redeem” us, from sin’s terrible impact. Joh
