3 Reasons to Love Your Enemies

Why You Should NOT Take Revenge Written by Dan Lee on 03/05/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Enemies, Forgiveness, God, Love, Mercy Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28 Last week we saw that Jesus demonstrated how to love and forgive our enemies. Here are three more reasons we should love our enemies: Vengeance is God’s Business Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord. (Romans 12:19) When we have been hurt by someone, we naturally want to hurt them back. But God says to let Him take care of it. First of all, He knows, much better than we do, what someone did wrong and what he or she deserves. He is totally just, and his judgments and decisions are 100% correct. When imperfect humans try to take revenge or carry out “justice,” a never-

How to Love Your Enemies and Pray for Them

God’s love is hard to understand Written by Lois on 26/04/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Enemies, Forgiveness, God, Love, Mercy …may you, having been deeply rooted and securely grounded in love, be fully capable of comprehending…the width and length and height and depth of the love of Christ, fully experiencing that amazing, endless love… Ephesians 3:17-19 AMP The love of Christ is so great it can even save His enemies. God’s love reaches out to the whole world and continues through the entire length of our lives. His love is so deep, it can reach you in discouragement and depression. He even reached Lazarus after he had been in His grave four days. This is the Savior’s love. God is Love The Bible tells us that if a person knows nothing about love, they can’t know God, because God is love. Jesus displayed His love for His enemies as He was dying. While Jesus was on the cross, He was praying for those who placed the nails in His hands and feet. Is there anyone else who

Loving Others - Is it really possible to love others?

Image
Abound in love to one another. 1 Thessalonians 3:12 God’s second great commandment is, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). (The first commandment is to love God — heart, mind, soul and strength.) I find that loving others can be a difficult assignment, especially when the “others” have treated me badly—for example, those to whom I have loaned money and who have neither repaid the loan, nor have made any attempt to do so. You could be facing a far more difficult situation, such as an unfaithful marriage partner or an abusive parent. Loving such people may seem impossible. There are two keys to our successfully loving others. First, loving others is a requirement, not an option. We may not feel like loving someone who has deeply offended us. But God requires us to decide to forgive and love that person in spite of the offense. In my experience, feelings will eventually follow. But the starting point is always a decision — to forgive and to love. Second,

Care for People All Around You

The book of Ruth in the Old Testament tells a beautiful story about love and loyalty among family. Written by Hope on 28/04/2013 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: God, Love, Loyalty, Relationships "And may the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow, just as our love for you overflows." (1 Thessalonians 3:12) The book of Ruth in the Old Testament tells a beautiful story about love and loyalty among family. Naomi, an Israelite, had traveled with her husband and sons to the foreign land of Moab to escape a famine. Her sons married local women, one of them being Ruth. When the husband and the sons died, Naomi chose to return to Israel and her people. Love Each Other Naomi and her daughters-in-law loved each other dearly. Wanting them to be provided for, Naomi urged them to remain in Moab to remarry. However, Ruth chose to stay with Naomi, dedicated to serving her mother-in-law -- and God. She demonstrated a love and loyalty the Apostles

Born at Christmas, Alive Forever

Jesus’ birth was miraculous, in more ways than one Written by Dan Lee on 26/12/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. John 1:1-2 Just like every other human, Jesus had a birthday (which is what Christians celebrate on Christmas) and came into the world as a baby. But that’s where the similarity ends. Unlike other people, Jesus’ existence did not begin on the day of His birth. From the beginning Each of the four Gospels offers a unique account of Jesus’ life. Mark’s Gospel starts with Jesus launching His public ministry. Matthew and Luke begin with genealogies. But John goes way, way back – to the very beginning. He writes: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” (John 1:1-2) It is hard to understand, but God lives outside of time and space. No one created God, but He has always existed. And

God Never Changes

One of the most important things about God is that He never changes. God is a perfect example of dependability. Written by GodLife on 21/09/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Psalms 90:2 People Change—God Does Not One of the most important things about God is that He never changes. Every part of His character is as true today as it was at the beginning of time. In Malachi 3:6, God says “I the Lord do not change...” Because of this, we can describe all of God’s attributes as eternal. For example, His eternal love, His eternal justice and His eternal holiness. People aren’t like this. Only God is. Creation is Finite; the Creator is Infinite Our universe is finite. That means it will only be here for a little while and it hasn’t been here forever. It will end. The creation will have an end as well. Hebrews 1:12 says, “Like a robe you will roll them up

God’s Faithfulness Each Year

God is Always Faithful Written by Susan on 03/01/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Everlasting, Promises, Through, Time, New Year Jesus answered, “I tell you for certain that even before Abraham was, I was, and I am.” John 8:58 One way God is not like us is that He is outside of time itself. This is not so easy for us to picture, but God explains clearly that He “inhabits eternity” in Isaiah 57:15. We're created beings living in time, so we experience time much differently than our God, who says “I am the first and I am the last.” (Isaiah 48:12). As we look forward to the New Year, how astounding it is to realize that God is already there! How can we relate to someone who says He is "the one who is and was and is coming?" (Revelation 1:8) What we experience in our lifetime has a lot to do with beginnings — and endings; Where is God in all of these times? He Is. We like to celebrate New Year’s Eve/Day, anniversaries, new beginnings, memories of friends and fa

Great is God’s Faithfulness

God’s faithfulness gives us confidence. Written by Joy on 16/05/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Faith, Faithfulness, God, Love, Trust “My heart is confident in you, O God; no wonder I can sing your praises with all my heart!” Psalm 108:1 Faithfulness is defined as: “constant; true to one’s word or promise”. This defines Our God! “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; My God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.” Psalm 18:2 A Firm Foundation “Who but our God is a solid rock?” (Psalm 18:31). God has not changed. In a world where everything is rapidly and constantly changing, God is like a solid, unchanging rock that we can stand on. God’s word is true and we can count on it because it is based in His faithful character. “The grass withers and the flowers fade but the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8) God does not make mistakes or change his mind. He is not swayed by public opinion. G

Who Is God?

God is the Supreme Being who created the heavens and the earth. Written by GodLife Series: New Believers Guide Tags: God Who is God? God is the Supreme Being who created the heavens and the earth. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God is invisible; He is a Spirit. God is eternal; He has been from all eternity; He has no beginning and no end. God has all power and all authority. There is no power in heaven or on earth that has more power than God. God is all wise and all knowing; He knows everything and He has perfect wisdom. Picture the most wise and powerful person on earth; then multiply it times a million and you still only have a tiny picture of a little fraction of who God is. Are You Angry with God?

Why do bad things happen to good people? Why is there so much injustice in the world? Written by Hope on 28/07/2013 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Anger, Bitter, Emotions, God "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." (Romans 8:28) Life Is Unfair Sin in our world makes it difficult to understand the world as God wants it to be. Bad things happen to "good people," and "good people" sometimes let - or even make - bad things happen. "Everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard" (Romans 3:23). It is so easy to want to sin. Why is life not easier? You might wonder, Why would God make a world where horrible things can happen? You might even be furious with Him. But injustice exists because of sin; God created people "for [His] glory" (Isaiah 43:10). God Is Just The Lord said, "I love justice" (Isaia

How to Care For the Sick

The Lord forgives our sins, heals us when we are sick and protects us from death. Written by Lois on 22/08/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Healing, Compassion, Truth, Admonitions, Jesus Suddenly a man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus. He said, “Lord, you have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to.” Jesus put his hand on the man and said, “I want to! Now you are well.” At once the man’s leprosy disappeared. Matthew 8:2-3 Jesus gives us unforgettable examples of how to care for the sick. He shows us His care for the sick by being willing to touch someone with a deadly and contagious disease with His bare hands. Back in the time of Jesus, people diagnosed with leprosy were untouched by any human, forcibly removed from their homes and families and sent into exile. Thanks to extensive medical breakthroughs, exiling lepers is no longer practiced, but there are many different diseases today that have taken the place of leprosy in the eyes of society. One

Why Am I Sick?

n many cases sickness has nothing to do with punishment for sin. In fact, God often uses suffering for His glory and our own good. Written by Hope on 03/10/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional “[The Lord] said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” II Corinthians 12:9a What is your health like? Do you know that God loves you and can work in your life, even if you are suffering physically? What You Might Have Heard Many Christians have heard that sickness or illness is caused by your sin or weak faith. Under Old Testament Law, God promised the nation of Israel: “If you listen to [God’s] regulations and faithfully obey them,... the Lord will protect you from all sickness” (Deuteronomy 7:12, 15). But “if you refuse to listen to the Lord your God, all these curses will come and overwhelm you (Deuteronomy 28:15), including being afflicted “with diseases” (Deuteronomy 28:21). Does that still apply today? Sickness Itself Is Not Evidence of A Curse In many places,

When Cancer Came to Our Home

No one in this life is exempt from struggles, heartaches, and difficulties. Tags: Cancer, Difficulty, Healing, Hope, Sickness Nearly 20 years after Patricia and I were married, we faced the biggest challenge of our lives when she discovered a lump in one breast. We were just finishing a six-city speaking tour in Scotland— and rushed back home to Portland, Oregon. Yes, there was a problem. A biopsy was necessary. Then came the doctor’s verdict. For a moment we sat in stunned silence, trying to block out his awful words. “The tumor is malignant and radical surgery must be performed immediately. We can’t delay.” Surgery was scheduled for the following Monday. Pat had cancer. When we got back to the house, I headed to my office in the basement. Somehow I had to come to grips with this terrible blow, I told myself. But a hundred emotions welled up inside me, and I began to weep. This was the sort of thing that happens to other people, but not to my wife. Not to Pat. My thoughts w

The Most Amazing Birth Ever

Christmas Written by Gary Fleetwood on 05/12/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Jesus, Christmas, Salvation, Sacrifice And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Luke 2:7 The virgin birth of Jesus Christ has to be the most amazing birth ever, but there seems to be very little information about it given in the Scriptures. It is really fascinating to think about the fact that in Luke 2:7 the actual birth of Jesus Christ is described with these very simple words, "And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn." Wow! One of the most important events of eternity, and just a few words to describe it. In fact, the New Testament simply does not spend a lot of time describing the birth of Jesus Christ. However, it does spend a great deal of time looking back at His v

Freedom From Depression: Part 1

God's light outshines the darkness of depression Tags: Depression, Freedom, God, Psalms I’ve come across several teenagers lately who are depressed. It really shakes me up! These kids are in the prime of their life and yet they are bogged down by chains of gloom, fear, and discouragement. When one is depressed, darkness reigns inside. I’m no psychiatrist, but I see it everywhere. Adults of every age are suffering, too. It can really knock the wind out of you to consider the sheer number of people who daily live in this reality. It is not of the Lord. The Bible says: “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). Because He is light and love, by all means, He wants us in the light with Him! So, what are we to do? I take great comfort and find specific direction for overcoming depression in Psalm 23. (And, no, this Psalm is not just for funerals! Unfortunately, it has that reputation. But it is, in fact, wisdom for everyday life.) Let’s observe it together

Why Suicide is Not an Option

Why suicide is the ultimate denial to God Written by GodLife on 16/08/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Betrayal, Depression, Failure, Hope, Purpose, Suicide Then Judas threw the silver coins down in the Temple and went out and hanged himself. Matthew 27:5 Life can sometimes feel hopeless. Maybe you are going through the death of a loved one, a permanent disability, failure or betrayal. You’re not alone. Do not choose Judas’ path of ending his own life with suicide. Instead, read on to see how some of God’s people have responded to these feelings rather than suicide: 1.Betrayal: David David, the “man after God’s own heart,” was running away from King Saul, whom he had served. He fled to Israel’s enemies and they betrayed him, taking his family captive. Even David’s trusted followers began to turn on him: “David, too, was in anguish. Some of his men talked about stoning him because they were so bitter about their families being taken.” Who else was left at this point? “B
