How to Make Decisions / Let God direct your decisions

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. Romans 8:14 Having guidance to make good decisions is one of the most beneficial aspects of being a devoted follower of Christ. If you need to make a decision about a job or about a relationship, or about what to do in any area of your life, you can count on God directing you in these 3 ways: 1. The Bible Everything we do must be in agreement with God’s Word. Of course, the best way to know God’s Word is to study the Bible every day. A mind that is trained in the Word of God can know the mind of God in any situation. Just be careful how you apply God’s Word in your life. Don’t just choose a random Bible verse without looking at its context. This is a form of divination, which is forbidden by God. (See Deuteronomy 18:10.) It’s said that a man was desperately seeking God’s guidance for a decision he had to make. He closed his eyes and opened the Bible somewhere near the back, his eyes randomly falling on a vers

How can We Have Joy in Trials?

The Bible says our faith is like gold that needs to be purified and refined in fire. The joy comes when we realize the fire makes the end product more valuable and beautiful. Written by Hope on 13/04/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Challenges, Difficulty, Joys, Trials “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” James 1:2 Why does God allow trials in our life? They help build our faith and dependence on God. The Bible says our faith is like gold that needs to be purified and refined in fire. The joy comes when we realize the fire makes the end product more valuable and beautiful. Expect Suffering Our hope cannot be based on a comfortable, trouble-free life here on earth. Jesus said, “In this world you will have troubles, but have courage! I have overcome the world” John 16:33. Jesus tell us to expect it; He says you will have troubles,

What is God’s Favor?

Think of Joseph’s story. (Genesis 37, 39-50) He was the favorite of his father's twelve sons. He became second-in-command to the Pharaoh of Egypt. He even saved the ancient world from famine. Surely this was a man in God's favor! Did you notice what was left out of that story? Stay in only certain parts of Joseph's story and it is easy to see his favor with God. But who could forget his brothers’ betrayal? How he was sold into slavery? How his purity was tested in his master's house? How he was thrown into prison for something he di

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God…..” Matthew 5:3-12 To be blessed by God means having God’s favor and goodness. We often think of blessings as riches, high position, health, and happiness. However, Jesus’ famous words about blessings show us that God has a different definition of being blessed. Who is Blessed? How to Care For the Sick

The Lord forgives our sins, heals us when we are sick and protects us from death. When Cancer Came to Our Home

No one in this life is exempt from struggles, heartaches, and difficulties. Tags: Cancer, Difficulty, Healing, Hope, Sickness Nearly 20 years after Patricia and I were married, we faced the biggest challenge of our lives when she discovered a lump in one breast. We were just finishing a six-city speaking tour in Scotland— and rushed back home to Portland, Oregon. Yes, there was a problem. A biopsy was necessary. Then came the doctor’s verdict. For a moment we sat in stunned silence, trying to block out his awful words. “The tumor is malignant and radical surgery must be performed immediately. We can’t delay.” Surgery was scheduled for the following Monday. Pat had cancer. When we got back to the house, I headed to my office in the basement. Somehow I had to come to grips with this terrible blow, I told myself. But a hundred emotions welled up inside me, and I began to weep. This was the sort of thing that happens to other people, but not to my wife. Not to Pat. My thoughts w

Why Am I Sick?

In many cases sickness has nothing to do with punishment for sin. In fact, God often uses suffering for His glory and our own good. Written by Hope on 03/10/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional “[The Lord] said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” II Corinthians 12:9a What is your health like? Do you know that God loves you and can work in your life, even if you are suffering physically? What You Might Have Heard Many Christians have heard that sickness or illness is caused by your sin or weak faith. Under Old Testament Law, God promised the nation of Israel: “If you listen to [God’s] regulations and faithfully obey them,... the Lord will protect you from all sickness” (Deuteronomy 7:12, 15). But “if you refuse to listen to the Lord your God, all these curses will come and overwhelm you (Deuteronomy 28:15), including being afflicted “with diseases” (Deuteronomy 28:21). Does that still apply today? Sickness Itself Is Not Evidence of A Curse In many places,

3 Questions for Being the "Perfect" Spouse

Believe it or not, finding the “perfect” spouse starts with being the kind of spouse you desire. Written by Hope on 02/03/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: God, Husband, Jesus, Marriage, Wife Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. (Ephesians 5:21) Last week we talked about finding the “perfect” spouse. Believe it or not, finding the “perfect” spouse starts with being the kind of spouse you desire. This week, we’ll focus on looking inward. 1. Am I Becoming the Person God Wants Me to Be? We should always strive to become more Christlike -- not a “Christian” in name only, but a true follower of Jesus. Whether you are new in the faith or have been following Christ for years, you should always seek to learn more about our Lord and grow in your love for him. Submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in your life, and let him make you into the person He wants you to be, for His glory. (Philippians 1:6) 2. Am I Able to Love and Lead God’s Way? Finding Your Spouse According to God’s Design

When you’re looking for a spouse, you’re looking for a ministry Written by GodLife on 15/08/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Marriage, Relationships, Husband, Wife, Submission …let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:33 So many stories confuse our picture of what love is. Romantic love has been the subject of most popular music, much poetry and fiction. The message is often that the exciting feelings can last forever. Or that there is one person out there with whom everything will fall into place automatically. True love, people say, will complete a person. But if we have such high expectations, and if we aren’t very clear about God’s plan for romantic love, how can we avoid being swept up in the world’s songs and stories? Do you really want Jesus to be at the center of your future marriage? If so, how can you get started His way? 1. Wait for God’s Awakening In the account of Eve’s creation, have you e

Most of all, he knew his identity: a chosen and beloved servant of the most High God. Here are three ways God can give you the same identity: 1. God makes sure you can relate to sinners Sometimes new believers are surprised to find that their old nature is not gone. You’ll always need God’s grace. Without Christ as your center, you can do nothing. God’s Way To Self-Esteem - Do you love yourself?

Do you love yourself? Written by GodLife on 02/08/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Faith, Growth, Identity, Self Esteem, Shame A second [commandment] is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:39 When Jesus quoted Leviticus 19:18, He was not teaching us to love ourselves. In stating that we already love ourselves, He was using the quality of that already-present love for ourselves to teach us how to love others. One who really loves is fully-invested in the loved one's best interests. Here are three ways that attitude towards self is supposed to be altered when God gives us a new heart (Psalm 51:10) with His love poured out (Romans 5:5) in it. 1. Practice repentance: Guilt brings shame and hopelessness. The whole time God is working through the things which happen to you to conform you to Christ's image (Romans 8:28-29), the world is also trying to force you to conform to its own. (Romans 12:2) One of the ways this is done is through subtl

Jesus Has Saved Me / How can you be sure you are saved?

How can you be sure you are saved? Written by GodLife Series: Look to Jesus Tags: Jesus, Salvation If you have had feelings of doubt following your decision to receive Christ, you are not alone. How can you be sure you are saved? How do Christians find confidence they will remain in their relationship with Jesus? What must I do to be saved? First, look to see what God says you must do to be saved. The Bible says salvation is simple. “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” (Acts 16:31) Salvation begins with “repentance” - turning from sin and depending only on Jesus, instead of yourself or someone else. When people asked Jesus what kind of human work God likes, He said, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.” (John 6:29). Second, what did God promise? “And this is what He promised us—eternal life” (1 John 2:25). It cost Jesus His own blood, giving up His life, to give you eternal life. But it was a free gift to you (Ephesians 2:8

What does this word mean to you? Are joy and happiness the same thing? No, there is a great difference between joy and happiness. Happiness is related to what happens to us, but joy is something we can have no matter what happens to us. We feel happy when everything is going well for us. If someone gave you a lot of money, it would probably make you happy. For oth

How Do You Repent from Sin?

What Does the Bible Say About Confession?

Even Kings Confess Their Sins. Written by Lois on 13/06/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Repent, Confess, Sin, Salvation, Jesus, Christ If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 There are two types of confession in the Bible: an initial confession of faith in Jesus Christ, and an ongoing confession of our sins to God. A confession of faith is the action you need to take to become a believer in Jesus Christ and receive the gift of eternal life He alone offers. Romans 10:9 says you will be saved if you honestly admit “…that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead.” True salvation is an undertaking of the heart, not just a mind task. It doesn’t seem like a complex decision, but is the most important decision of your life. Jesus goes on to say in Matthew 10:32: “Everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heave

Why is it important to confess your sin to God correctly? Written by GodLife on 27/06/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Mercy, Grace, Confession, Repentance, Humility …everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. Luke 18:14b If someone mentions “true confessions,” what thoughts come to your mind? If you’re like a lot of people, you may have needed to confess those thoughts right away! Hearing someone else’s confession may give you a moment of forbidden enjoyment. They cheated on a test, but you didn’t — does that make you feel better? Another person had an affair, and you’re the only one who knows. Now that you know your neighbor has been stealing money from his company, it explains why he can afford nicer things than you have. All of this makes it hard for us to really learn from someone else’s confession, because selfish thoughts get in the way. Reactions like these are self-centered and evil. If only there was an example
