Galatians 5:22-23 The Bible is filled with amazing words. I like to call them “God Words” because they are words that have the supernatural ability to transform a person’s life. What are some of these life-transforming words? In this devotional series, we are going to look at the some key biblical words that Paul provided in Galatians 5:22-23: ”But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Of those nine qualities listed, none may have a more profound impact on our life than the first word: “love.” This is the Greek word “agape” and it is the highest love that is possible to feel, express

God’s Words: Spirit and Life

Read the Bible’s instruction as the words of a Loving Father Written by Gary Fleetwood on 18/07/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Bible, Love, Spirit, Life It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. John 6:63 One of the amazing qualities of the Word of God is its power to change lives. Whenever you are reading the Scriptures and you come to a passage that has a listing of words or attributes, look carefully at that list. Why? It means the writer wants to make sure you understand the importance of each thing on the list. What about all those lists of sins? When an author makes a list featuring bad qualities, actions or attitudes for Christians, it is a good idea to remember what is listed and do your best to avoid making them a habit. Sinful or foolish habits and behaviors are bound to lead to harmful results and consequences in your life. For example, I know that if I drive on the wrong side of

If God is Good, Why Don’t I Have Enough Money?

How and When Can I Claim the Promise, “God will supply all your needs?” Written by  GodLife  on 25/10/2015 Series:  Weekly Devotional Tags:  Benevolence ,  Giving ,  Money ,  Poverty ,  Providence ,  Provision ,  Riches ,  Unemployment ,  Work “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 It’s shameful when someone says, “You are poor because you do not have enough faith.” The Bible says when they make godliness a way to get rich, they have “corrupt minds” and “have turned their backs on the truth.”  ( 1 Timothy 6:5-6 )  David did say,  “I have been young and now I am old, yet I have not seen the righteous abandoned or his children begging for bread.” ( Psalm 37:25 )  But there’s a big difference between “wealth” and “begging for bread.” How can you keep from missing out on all your loving Father has for you? Put His Kingdom First “God will supply all

Do you worry about money?

3 reasons not to worry about money Written by Hope on 08/03/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Finances, Money, Worry “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.” Proverbs 3:9 The Bible is full of stories showing God working in the lives of wealthy people. Abraham, Israel’s King David, and Lydia (a woman who sold purple dye) are just a few. But when Jesus also said that “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” it was a warning that money can hurt more than it helps. (Matthew 19:24). How can you follow Jesus and His Word rather than letting money keep you from following God? Here are 3 truths to help. Money Will Never Satisfy Although money is not a bad thing, “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). Christians should not let anything--including money--interfere with their relationship with God. God is a great provider. Even among the w

Your Finances and God's Promises

Many passages in the Bible talk about giving our money and other possessions given to us by God back to God Tags: Finances, Generosity, God, Money, Tithe In many passages of the Bible where it talks about giving our money (and other possessions given to us by God) back to God, He always adds a promise to it. He doesn’t have to do that! Because He is God He could just say, “Do this because I say so – that’s why.” But He doesn’t. He is loving and good, and He chooses to bless us when we obey Him. While we do not respond to God’s command in order to gain a personal benefit, let’s examine the promises He makes to us when we are faithful in our giving. Look up Proverbs 3:9-10. The first lesson in these verses is that we honor the Lord with our wealth. Why? To express gratitude for all He has given us. This honors Him, and we do it because we love Him. We also see that God requires our “firstfruits.” That means we set aside our giving for Him right when we first receive, not out of

Four Biblical Thoughts on Riches

Does God want us to be rich? Written by Dan Lee on 15/03/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Contentment, Finances, Money, Poor, Riches “Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.” 1 Timothy 6:6 Are some preachers right when they say God wants us to be rich? They tell us we can get anything just by praying for it. Their lavish lifestyles seem to be an example of how God wants to “bless” us. Paul wrote a letter to Timothy and gave a strong NO to this idea. Here are 4 biblical thoughts on riches: 1. Be Content With God “Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth” (1 Timothy 6:6). This verse tells us that if we are believers in Christ and have a good relationship with God, we should be satisfied. We are already wealthy. On the other hand, when we place anything, including material things, above God, we make idols out of them. How terrible it would be if following Jesus helped us only in this life! (1 Corinthians 15:19) God may use the resources

Covetousness / Be Content with what You Have

Be Content with what You Have Written by Dan Lee on 04/07/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Contentment, Covetousness, Greed, Envy, Satisfaction But godliness with contentment is great gain. 1 Timothy 6:6 If they are asked to name some of the Ten Commandments, many people will say, “You shall not steal; you shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery.” But few will mention number ten, which is, in its shortest version, is “You shall not covet” (Exodus 20:17). Here are four reasons to watch out for covetousness: It’s as bad as any other sin When the Apostle Paul describes the relationship between sin and the law in his great epistle to the Romans, does he mention sexual sin or murder? No, he mentions covetousness! “. . . for I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, ‘You shall not covet.’ But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead” (Romans 7:7-8).

Bible Terms: Understanding God

Sometimes people don't understand what we are talking about when we are trying to share the Good News Tags: Bible, Cross, Evangelism, God, Gospel According to pollster George Gallup Jr., “Americans revere the Bible, but—by and large, they don’t read it.” As a result, many don’t know what it says. And when they read it for the first time, a single Bible verse can be baffling to someone who has not grown up in the church. Here are 18 terms worth defining when reading the Bible or talking with people about Jesus Christ. SEEK God is not hiding or trying to elude us. In fact, the Bible says God actively pursues a relationship with each person. So, how do we seek God? Compare how we seek wealth, prestige or romance—we read up on, work hard, set priorities, and surround ourselves with others who will help us achieve our goal. To seek God, we make Him our first priority in life; read the Bible, pray, trust Him, and learn from others. When we pay attention, His activity in our lives

WHAT IS MANDELA DAY?

Image
Every year on 18 July — the day Nelson Mandela was born — the UN asks individuals around the world to mark Nelson Mandela International Day (18 July) by making a difference in their communities. Everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better, and Mandela Day is an occasion for everyone to take action and inspire change. For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity — as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. The Nelson Mandela Foundation is dedicating this year's Mandela Day to Action Against Poverty, honouring Nelson Mandela's leadership and devotion to fighting poverty and promoting social justice for all. Nelson Mandela International Day commemorates the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world. It was launched on his birthday, 18 July, in 2009 via a unanimous decision b

What is a Cult?

How to tell the false from the true Written by Dan Lee on 11/07/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Church, Cults, Discernment For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 Do you remember the “People’s Temple”? Started in Indianapolis in 1955 by the Reverend Jim Jones, it moved to San Francisco in 1971. The headquarters was just a few miles from my house, and mere blocks from the hospital where I was born. As a teenager I often rode the bus right past it. In 1974, the People’s Temple established a settlement in Guyana, South America. It promised a tropical paradise, free from the wickedness of the outside world. By 1978, the population of Jonestown, as it was called, had grown to over 900. And in November of that year, the residents of Jonestown were forced at gunpoin
