Daily Bread: A Rock Solid Foundation Do you have unhealthy relationships influencing you?

Prepare Do you ever wonder what it takes to please God? It couldn’t be clearer than in Proverbs. Ask God to give you a willing heart as you prepare to be counseled by Him. Read Proverbs 1:1-19 Explore There is a well-known saying in Spanish – “Tell me who you walk with and I will tell you who you are.” Who you associate with tells a lot about a person. And in Proverbs, the Lord wastes no time warning against such basic mistakes. It is interesting that the fear of the Lord (vs 1-7) and choosing friends (vs 10-19) are the first two subjects in the book of Proverbs. We should not take lightly this first passage – one of the longest in the whole book. As Solomon, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, lays the foundation on how to live a successful life, he gives us two clear points of emphasis – wisdom through the fear of the Lord and foolishness through poor relationships (v 7). Take time to check out Psalm 128:1, Psalm 112:1, Proverbs 8:3, Job 1:1, and 2 Corinthians 5:

Jesus Can Heal Addiction

You can be free from addiction. Written by Lois on 24/05/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Addiction, Forgiveness, Freedom, Grace, Sin The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT) We all have wrong desires and are tempted, but God has given us an Advocate who will help us resist sin if we are willing. Are you tired of being addicted to alcohol, sex, drugs, pornography or greed? Jesus has made a way for you to be free. This is how you can resist temptation and allow Jesus to heal your addiction. There are countless people who are enjoying an addiction because they have not faced consequences yet. Galatians 6:8 tells us if a person “sows to please his own wrong desires, he will be planting seeds of evil and he will surely reap a harvest of spiritual decay and death; but if he plants the good things of the Spirit, he will reap the everla

Fasting for three days can regenerate entire immune system, study finds

Sarah Knapton, science correspondent Fasting for as little as three days can regenerate the entire immune system, even in the elderly, scientists have found in a breakthrough described as "remarkable". Although fasting diets have been criticised by nutritionists for being unhealthy, new research suggests starving the body kick-starts stem cells into producing new white blood cells, which fight off infection. Scientists at the University of Southern California say the discovery could be particularly beneficial for people suffering from damaged immune systems, such as cancer patients on chemotherapy. Recovering From Addiction

How far are you willing to go in destroying your life with an addiction? Written by David on 28/03/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Repentance, Forgiveness, New Life, Restitution, Brokenness If you have sinned, you should tell each other what you have done. Then you can pray for one another and be healed. The prayer of an innocent person is powerful, and it can help a lot. James 5:16 The end of the line for an addicted person is a self-made prison with four walls — Terror, Confusion, Frustration and Despair. There seem to be no doors or windows, and fear fills your life as you see that you’ve embraced self-destruction of your own accord. There is no protection for what awaits you in the deepest, darkest, isolated, solitary moment of an out-of-control life of sin. God’s Word is there to give you hope. But first there must be a "death:" “In the same way, you must think of yourselves as dead to the power of sin. But Christ Jesus has given life to you, and you live

Healing Stories in the Bible

Is it better to live with the disease or to be healed? Written by Lois on 21/03/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Grace, Healing, Mercy, Sickness, Sin One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?' John 5:5 In Bible times, leprosy was a dreaded, incurable skin condition. It caused physical deformity. It meant victims couldn’t come to worship meetings. They had to live by themselves. It made a good picture of what sin does to us. Sin is a disease that affects young and old, great and small. It cuts us off from God and from others. Sometimes We’re Reluctant The Old Testament book of 2 Kings tells about a man named Naaman. He was a great army captain in the time of the prophet Elisha. Naaman had been told the prophet could heal him of his leprosy, and paid him a visit. Instead of meeting him, Elisha sent a messenger instru

While I Kept Partying, My Parents Kept Praying - Part 4: Working All Things For Good

Foundationally, every single person has to be born again. Written by Luis Palau Tags: Salvation This article was written by Andrew Palau. In my life, I’ve seen God work out His promise of Romans 8:28, that He causes “all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” For example, I went to a lot performances of the rock band Grateful Dead before I followed Christ. Their model was festival and open air, and free flowing multi-generational. When the Palau Association wanted to reach large cities for Christ, I remembered my Grateful Dead days. My brother Kevin and I imagined a gathering far different from the crusade model for evangelism. We dreamed of a party that would contain not only the Gospel, but also Christian music. We told Dad, “Let’s go to a park, let’s go to a beach, let’s shut down the city streets… and proclaim Jesus Christ.” In 1999, our dream came true. Our first two festivals were held in Portland, Oregon

While I Kept Partying, My Parents Kept Praying - Part 3: Profession of Faith

My transformational moment Written by Luis Palau Tags: Salvation, Testimony This article was written by Andrew Palau. Six months after I read Say Yes! Dad invited me to a Palau outreach in Jamaica. While I had absolutely no interest in going to an evangelistic gathering, I reasoned, I love my folks. I love to travel. And I love to fish. And, then, to make the invitation even more enticing, it was freezing at the time where I lived (Boston). The thought of traveling to warm Jamaica was quite appealing. I was 27 years old when I listened to Dad tell the Jamaican crowd about the difference that Jesus Christ makes in a life. I had heard that message hundreds of times before, but for the first time I sincerely wanted that difference. I made a profession of faith that day. Despite my profession of faith and getting involved in Bible study, I did not feel a real sense of intimacy with the Lord. I’d ask Him, Why is this not working for me? I’m really sincere. And then the Lord merc

While I Kept Partying, My Parents Kept Praying - Part 2: Something Was Missing

There was something that relationships, drugs and wild parties just couldn't fill. Written by Luis Palau Tags: Partying, Testimony This article was written by Andrew Palau. By the time I attended the University of Oregon, I blended right in with my fraternity buddies. On the outside it seemed like I was a happy guy and could juggle classes, work, and the party life. But on the inside I was miserable. I felt guilty about so many of the poor choices I had made because they were diametrically opposed to the way that I had been brought up. It seemed like there was a void in my life- that something was missing. Something that relationships, and drugs, and wild parties just couldn’t fill. A sense of emptiness continued, even after I graduated from college and began working in Boston. I kept partying, felt no peace, and drank to hide the pain inside. I felt like I was sinking into the depths of despair. I would look into a mirror and ask myself, What really matters? Where can I

While I Kept Partying, My Parents Kept Praying: Part 1

Everyone has to decide for themselves whether they are going to be followers of Christ. Written by Luis Palau Tags: Salvation, Testimony This article was written by Andrew Palau. Like all people, I had to decide for myself whether or not I was going to be a follower of Jesus Christ. My parents had hoped and prayed that I would make this decision as a child, but I did not. It took 27 years for me to finally decide for myself. I grew up in a great Christian home. Mom and Dad loved me and were truly gentle parents. We went to a great church. Regardless of the tremendous blessings in my life, I wanted what the world had to offer. Although my father, international evangelist Luis Palau, preached to millions, he had no words that could humanly change my heart. When I was about 12 or 13 years old, a friend’s older siblings introduced me to stuff that even the wilder kids weren’t doing. As time went on I began building a reputation of being the wildest and craziest kid around. I jus

In the World, Not of the World

Jesus calls us to be different from the World, while making a difference in the World. Written by Joy on 08/08/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Culture, Life, Light, Sin “Jesus prayed, ‘They do not belong to this world any more than I do. Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.’” John 17:16-17 We cannot expect non-believers to have godly moral standards and desire to please God. We can, and should, expect Christians to act differently than the culture that they live in—as different as night and day. Darkness of World Culture “This, then is the judgement: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19). Human culture is ruled by sin and selfish desires. Without Jesus people are lost in darkness (Matthew 18:10-14), dead in their sin (Ephesians 2:1-5), separated from God (Colossians 1:21-22) and condemned without hope (John 3:18). When you are in the dark, you cannot se

With So Much Evil in the World, is there Hope?

We have hope, because God is going to make everything new! Written by Hope on 07/09/2014 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Devil, Evil, Hope “Nothing evil will be allowed to enter.” Revelation 21:27a The Bible teaches us that God loves and cares for His Creation, and that includes us. This love caused Him to offer us Salvation through Jesus Christ. God promises eternal, peaceful life with Him. Our current existence is filled with temptation, sin and evil; but God’s plan includes removing all remainders of evil in His creation. We have hope, because God is going to make everything new! Evil Won’t Last In 2 Timothy, Paul says we will have a “difficult” time on earth before Jesus Christ returns: “People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their frie

Freedom From Depression:

God's light outshines the darkness of depression Written by Luis Palau Tags: Depression, Freedom, God, Psalms I’ve come across several teenagers lately who are depressed. It really shakes me up! These kids are in the prime of their life and yet they are bogged down by chains of gloom, fear, and discouragement. When one is depressed, darkness reigns inside. I’m no psychiatrist, but I see it everywhere. Adults of every age are suffering, too. It can really knock the wind out of you to consider the sheer number of people who daily live in this reality. It is not of the Lord. The Bible says: “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). Because He is light and love, by all means, He wants us in the light with Him! So, what are we to do? I take great comfort and find specific direction for overcoming depression in Psalm 23. (And, no, this Psalm is not just for funerals! Unfortunately, it has that reputation. But it is, in fact, wisdom for everyday life.) Let

Why Suicide is Not an Option

Why suicide is the ultimate denial to God Written by GodLife on 16/08/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Betrayal, Depression, Failure, Hope, Purpose, Suicide Then Judas threw the silver coins down in the Temple and went out and hanged himself. Matthew 27:5 Life can sometimes feel hopeless. Maybe you are going through the death of a loved one, a permanent disability, failure or betrayal. You’re not alone. Do not choose Judas’ path of ending his own life with suicide. Instead, read on to see how some of God’s people have responded to these feelings rather than suicide: 1.Betrayal: David David, the “man after God’s own heart,” was running away from King Saul, whom he had served. He fled to Israel’s enemies and they betrayed him, taking his family captive. Even David’s trusted followers began to turn on him: “David, too, was in anguish. Some of his men talked about stoning him because they were so bitter about their families being taken.” Who else was left at this point? “B

Why Won’t God Heal Me?

Lessons about God’s healing through the Life of Paul Written by Dan Lee on 14/03/2017 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Sickness, Health, Healing, Prayer, Sovereignty But He replied, ‘My kindness is all you need. My power is strongest when you are weak.’ So if Christ keeps giving me his power, I will gladly brag about how weak I am. Yes, I am glad to be weak or insulted or mistreated or to have troubles and sufferings, if it is for Christ. Because when I am weak, I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 There are many wonderful stories of healing in the Bible. Jesus healed many people of leprosy, blindness, lameness and other ailments. He even raised Lazarus from the dead! No doubt you have also heard of God healing people today. God still hears our prayers for healing and has the power to heal and do all kinds of miracles. So you may be wondering, “What about ME?” I, or someone I love, have been struggling with (name the disease) all these years. And I have prayed for healing, fas

If God is Good, Why Don’t I Have Enough Money?

How and When Can I Claim the Promise, “God will supply all your needs?” Written by GodLife on 25/10/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Benevolence, Giving, Money, Poverty, Providence, Provision, Riches, Unemployment, Work “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 It’s shameful when someone says, “You are poor because you do not have enough faith.” The Bible says when they make godliness a way to get rich, they have “corrupt minds” and “have turned their backs on the truth.” (1 Timothy 6:5-6) David did say, “I have been young and now I am old, yet I have not seen the righteous abandoned or his children begging for bread.” (Psalm 37:25) But there’s a big difference between “wealth” and “begging for bread.” How can you keep from missing out on all your loving Father has for you? Put His Kingdom First “God will supply all your needs” was the Apostle Paul’s promise t

Do you worry about money?

3 reasons not to worry about money Written by Hope on 08/03/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Finances, Money, Worry “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.” Proverbs 3:9 The Bible is full of stories showing God working in the lives of wealthy people. Abraham, Israel’s King David, and Lydia (a woman who sold purple dye) are just a few. But when Jesus also said that “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” it was a warning that money can hurt more than it helps. (Matthew 19:24). How can you follow Jesus and His Word rather than letting money keep you from following God? Here are 3 truths to help. Money Will Never Satisfy Although money is not a bad thing, “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). Christians should not let anything--including money--interfere with their relationship with God. God is a great provider. Even among the w

Did God Put a Hole in My Pocket?

Does your money vanish like a vapor? Written by Lois on 07/06/2016 Series: Weekly Devotional You have planted much but harvest little…You earn money, but put it into a bag with holes. Haggai 1:6 On a hot summer day you can actually see water evaporating from a stream. Does your money appear to be vanishing? Are you constantly spending more than you earn? Maybe the solution is not getting more money into your hands. Let’s go to God’s word to see what the Scriptures say about money. Do you believe God cares about what you do with the money you earn? What has first place in your life, God or money? For one month, try writing down all of your purchases. This is a good way to reveal where your money is going and what has first place in your heart. Does God have first place, or do you spend most of your money eating out or buying clothes and other material things? Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, “…first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness

Your Finances and God's Promises

Many passages in the Bible talk about giving our money and other possessions given to us by God back to God Written by Luis Palau Tags: Finances, Generosity, God, Money, Tithe In many passages of the Bible where it talks about giving our money (and other possessions given to us by God) back to God, He always adds a promise to it. He doesn’t have to do that! Because He is God He could just say, “Do this because I say so – that’s why.” But He doesn’t. He is loving and good, and He chooses to bless us when we obey Him. While we do not respond to God’s command in order to gain a personal benefit, let’s examine the promises He makes to us when we are faithful in our giving. Look up Proverbs 3:9-10. The first lesson in these verses is that we honor the Lord with our wealth. Why? To express gratitude for all He has given us. This honors Him, and we do it because we love Him. We also see that God requires our “firstfruits.” That means we set aside our giving for Him right when we fir

Four Biblical Thoughts on Riches. Does God want us to be rich?

Does God want us to be rich? Written by Dan Lee on 15/03/2015 Series: Weekly Devotional Tags: Contentment, Finances, Money, Poor, Riches “Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.” 1 Timothy 6:6 Are some preachers right when they say God wants us to be rich? They tell us we can get anything just by praying for it. Their lavish lifestyles seem to be an example of how God wants to “bless” us. Paul wrote a letter to Timothy and gave a strong NO to this idea. Here are 4 biblical thoughts on riches: 1. Be Content With God “Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth” (1 Timothy 6:6). This verse tells us that if we are believers in Christ and have a good relationship with God, we should be satisfied. We are already wealthy. On the other hand, when we place anything, including material things, above God, we make idols out of them. How terrible it would be if following Jesus helped us only in this life! (1 Corinthians 15:19) God may use the resources

One Man's Death Every Man's Guarantee

Hope for a "new world" must rest in God, not man Written by Luis Palau Tags: Death, Easter, Hope, Life, Power, Resurrection We all keep hoping for peace. World War I was "the war to end all wars." Then we found ourselves in the midst of World War II-again sending out sons, husbands, and fathers who may not return. The wars kept coming. Korea. Vietnam. Iraq. Each one pouring out death and destruction to an extent the world hadn’t witnessed previously. If only military victory carried a lifetime guarantee of no more death, no more failure, no more fear. Or better yet, an eternal guarantee. But only one man’s death carries that guarantee. No human effort to build a better world can guarantee lasting peace in the Persian Gulf, or Somalia, or anywhere else for that matter. The freedom that costs the blood of our precious young men and women isn’t permanent. It lasts only until another aggressive power comes along, unjustly claiming supremacy over others. Then t

Does Faith Help an Entrepreneur?

Being a devout Christian and being an entrepreneur aren't usually found in the same sentence. I've seen articles and heard people even say that the two don't go well together, saying one is progressive while one is degressive. However, in my opinion this couldn't be further from the truth. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge believer in the saying, "manifest your dreams." I believe that if you have a deep passion for the work you are doing and become willing to do whatever it takes then you can accomplish just about anything. It may sound cliché, but this is the exact moment where I see God fit in many lives. You see, the biggest part of manifestation is truly when someone spends hours on a daily basis dreaming about what they plan on creating. When someone deeply envisions something they begin to grow a passion for it. Passion leads to hard work. Hard work leads to success. Christians who are empathetic, observant, and live to help others (as we we
